RBA card surcharge ban · 1 October 2026

Surcharge ban? Handled.

From 1 October 2026, Melbourne cafés, salons, clinics and small retailers can't surcharge card payments anymore. Margin Assist is a one-week, $499 fixed-fee service. We work out what card payments actually cost you, redo your menu prices so customers don't notice, and update your till, UberEats and signage before the deadline.

The problem

Most owners are paying more than they think.

The RBA confirmed it on 31 March. From 1 October, you can't add a surcharge to card payments. That's 1.5 to 2 percent of revenue most cafés are quietly recovering today, gone overnight.

The headline rate the bank quotes you (often 1.1 percent) isn't what you're actually paying. Add up the hidden fees on top and the real number is closer to 1.7 to 2.2 percent. Reprice without that number and you'll either swallow the loss or hike prices and annoy your regulars.

About

Two founders. No agency between you and the work.

Margin Assist started in May 2026, specifically because the surcharge ban gives Melbourne small businesses a five-month problem. Bigger consultancies aren't going to door-knock cafés on Lygon Street to fix it. We will.

The last six months we've spent living inside monthly card-terminal statements, POS settings, and the RBA's papers on what card payments cost. We're not a twenty-year-old firm. We don't have a wall of testimonials yet because we haven't asked for one yet. The first engagements are happening now. Be aware of that going in.

Two of us run every engagement. One is on-site for the start, the review, and the launch; the other is reading through your statements and working out the new prices in the background. Two sets of eyes on every audit. No subcontractors, no offshore copy team, no account manager between you and the work.

FAQ

Reasonable questions, straight answers.

Anything not covered here, ask us on the call.

What does the $499 actually cover?

All five things in full, three on-site visits within Melbourne metro, all the changes inside your POS and online ordering, the printed signage and counter card design, the customer messages pack, the Friday-morning launch with us in the room, and a 14-day window where we come back and fix anything that goes sideways at no charge. Officeworks bills you directly for menus and signage, typically $30–80 depending on your venue.

Why should I trust you with my POS login and merchant statements?

Fair question, and the honest answer is in four parts:

  • A written one-page service agreement is signed before any login is shared. NDA available on request.
  • Where your POS lets us, we use read-only access. Where we need to make actual changes, we set up a temporary account you can switch off any time, not yours.
  • Your statements are kept in a locked folder only the two of us can open, used only for the audit, and deleted within 14 days of handover. We don't keep statement data after the engagement closes.
  • We carry professional indemnity and public liability insurance.

None of that makes us a 20-year-old firm. It does mean the things you'd worry about going wrong have written answers.

Can't I just turn the surcharge off and reprice the menu myself?

Yes, you can. And most cafés will. Most cafés will also quietly lose 1.5–2% of margin on every transaction from 1 October because they didn't work out which items can take the small price lift without customers noticing. We exist because that maths (coffee stays at $5.50, the alt-milk surcharge moves up 30c, the panini absorbs 80c) is the hard part. Turning the surcharge off is the easy part.

What if my card volume is below $20K a month?

Below roughly $15,000 in monthly card volume, the maths doesn't reliably clear our $1,500 guarantee threshold, which means we can't honestly promise the engagement will pay for itself. In that case we'll tell you on the call and point you at the free RBA, Square, and Tyro guidance instead. You're better served by a half-hour read of those than by a $499 engagement that might not return.

What's the cancellation and refund policy?

Two cases. If the Monday audit doesn't identify $1,500 of annual margin protection or merchant fee savings, the engagement is free. Full refund inside 5 business days. Otherwise, the fee is non-refundable once the Tuesday repricing work begins, since the bulk of the cost sits in those two days. If anything we've delivered breaks during the 14 days after go-live, we come back and fix it at no charge. That's part of the price, not a separate retainer.

Are you registered tax or BAS agents?

No. We're a fixed-price service, not tax advisers. We don't give tax advice, and the repricing plan doesn't replace your accountant's BAS work. Where the work touches tax, we partner with a registered BAS agent for that piece. Your accountant is still your accountant.
